Meloni dumps Orban, Macron loses 7 seats: what happens in the European Parliament

For Emmanuel Macron it literally rains in the wet. After announcing his resignation following the heavy defeat he received in the European elections, the French president now has to face the new composition of the European Parliament, with the first signs that can only make him worry.

Just today the reference group of his political formation, RenewEuropesaw further pieces lost. The 7 deputies of AnoCzech party linked to President Andrej Babis, they have in fact abandoned the group, bringing the abacus of Macron’s seats to 74, compared to 102 in the previous legislature. The road to Ursula von der Leyen’s reconfirmation is therefore becoming increasingly tortuous.

On the other side the ECR conservativesled by Giorgia Melonisaw the arrival of 11 new MEPs which brings the group to 83 parliamentarians, overtaking Macron compared to the previous legislature and therefore becoming the third largest in Europe behind the People’s Party and the Socialists and Democrats.

However, this enlargement caused the negotiations for the entry of the Hungarians to fail Fidesztraining of the prime minister Viktor Orban who after breaking with the EPP in 2021 remained in the non-member group. The real reason for the failed Orban-Conservatories marriage would be the membership of the Aur. The Hungarian president did not take kindly to the entry of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians with its 5 elected representatives, immediately sending a clear message via Mate Kocsis, leader of the Hungarian parliamentary group: “Fidesz will never share a group in the European Parliament with Aur, known for its extreme anti-Hungarian position”.
