Shopping cart prices slow in June: +1.4%

SAccording to Istat’s preliminary estimates, in June 2024 the prices of the “shopping cart” in Italy underwent a slight trend increase of +1,4%compared to +1.8% in the previous month.

The slowdown in the annual growth rate of shopping cart prices continues in June as well

The slowdown phase in the growth rate that began in May, after the peaks in March (+6.8%) and April (+6.0%), is therefore confirmed.

In detail:

  • Food prices have increased by +1,5% (it was +1.9% in May).
  • The prices of household and personal care goods have increased by +1,3% (it was +1.7% in May).
  • High purchase frequency products have seen an increase in +2,1% (it was +2.5% in May).

The slowdown is mainly due to the drop in prices of regulated energy goods (-2.5%) and, to a lesser extent, that of unregulated energy goods (+1.1%).

Despite the slowdown, inflation remains at high levels. The consumer price index for working families and employees (FOE) recorded an increase of +8,0% on an annual basis in June, slightly down compared to +8.1% in May.

Istat emphasizes that the trend in prices is influenced by a series of factors, including the increase in the cost of raw materials and energy.

As for the coming months, Istat expects a further moderation of inflation, but the picture remains uncertain due to the progress of the conflict in Ukraine and its repercussions on the prices of raw materials and energy.
