PALERMO – The tragedy devastated the race, but the defendants are not guilty of manslaughter. On 21 April 2017 during the special test “Piano Battaglia 1” of the Targa Florio lost their lives the driver from Messina Mauro Amendolia and a race commissioner, Giuseppe Laganàoriginally from Lentini.
The Court of Appeal presided over by Fernando Sestito confirmed theabsolution of the director of the event Marco Cascinoof the delegate for setting up the route Antonio Poconi and of theAci (cited as civilly liable).
The defense line of the lawyers Roberto Tricoli, Massimiliano Miceli, Marco Baroncini and Francesco La Loggia has passed.
Amendolia was at the wheel of the BMW Mini Cooper. He was not wearing his seat belt when he lost control of the car on the wet asphalt.
The accusation that the defendants should have monitored and ensured that all safety regulations were respected did not stand up. Including seat belt checks. The victim’s daughter was wearing them and was saved.
For the death of the race commissionerHowever, the responsibility was attributed to Amendolia alone who, losing control of the car, hit Laganà.
