The investigations continue, the case is not closed. However, answers are awaited regarding the death of the Carabinieri Marshal Eugenio Fasano. The hearing before the preliminary hearing judge (preliminary hearing judge) is scheduled for Wednesday 20 September. The Carabinieri marshal of the barracks in via Clitunno, in the Trieste-Salario area, died at the age of 43, in circumstances still to be clarified, on January 24, 2019, after a soccer match with colleagues. What happened in the locker room? The question is at the center of the judicial dispute.
The family’s hope is to have, once and for all, clear answers about Fasano’s death. Because the official version on the death, that of one “sudden death from sports”, never convinced the marshal’s family. And not even the judge for preliminary investigations Rosalba Liso who, in the hearing last March 15th, rejected the request for dismissal submitted to her by the prosecutor, Roberta Capponi, due to the “unfoundedness of the crime report”. The investigating judge instead ordered further investigations, to be carried out in six months.
Four and a half years later, there are still many doubts about the death of Marshal Fasano. On 22 June 2022 the investigating judge, Nicolò Marino had ordered that the public prosecutor carried out all the additional investigations necessary to clarify the matterstarting from the autopsy on the carabiniere’s body, which had never been carried out before.
The investigations, however, did not lead to just one truth, but to two different scenarios. According to the expert opinion of the CTU (office technical consultants) the marshal’s death could be attributed “to a terminal cardio-respiratory arrest due to multi-organ failure and cardiogenic shock following an acute myocardial infarction in a subject undergoing primary angioplasty” they write the doctors Vincenzo Arena and Nicola Silvestri in the conclusions of the document. So, a natural death.
While the party’s technical consultant appointed by the carabiniere’s family, Doctor Giuseppe Merolla, in the conclusions of his report, reconstructs a different scenario, which would have characterized the last hours of the policeman’s life, starting from a “probable argument with a participant in the soccer match on January 22, 2019, followed by probable physical contact proven by multiple rib fractures”. Which was then followed by an “illness due to stenocardial crisis in a subject with unknown coronary artery disease (…)”, a “cardiac arrest with asystole which lasted at least for over 30 minutes before EF could receive adequate treatment” and, finally, an “impressive hemorrhage -pneumo-thorax due to laceration of the pleural sheets from the fracture stump of the right fifth rib”. Merolla’s thesis therefore leans towards a storm of kicks and punches. As the family of the marshal of the barracks in via Clitunno, in the Trieste-Salario district, has been supporting for years.
Two parliamentary questions were also presented on the marshal’s case: premiere on June 16, 2022, signed by the then senator of the Mixed Group and president of the Anti-Mafia Commission Nicola Morra. The second was presented on April 20, 2023, by the deputy of the 5 Star Movement, Arnaldo Lomuti.
