Today at 12, mobile phones in Lombardy will be reached by an IT-alert test message, the new national public alert system. All devices connected to cell phones in the region will ring at the same time. “The system is very useful” declares the regional councilor for security and civil protection, Romano La Russa “since it is becoming increasingly important to promptly inform the population in the event of natural disasters”. The experimental phase has been started in some regions and will be completed by 2023.

In case of emergencies
Once the testing phase has been completed, IT-alert will allow the population to be directly informed in the event of serious emergencies that are imminent or ongoing, in particular in relation to six cases under the responsibility of the National Civil Protection Service: tsunami, collapse of a large dam, volcanic activity , nuclear accidents or radiological emergencies, major accidents in industrial plants or heavy rainfall. IT-alert will not replace the information and communication methods already in use at regional and local level, but will complement them.

Through cell-broadcast technology, IT-alert messages can be sent to a group of geographically close telephone cells, delimiting an area that corresponds as closely as possible to that affected by the emergency. There are obviously technological limitations. A message addressed to an area can also reach users who are outside the area itself.
