Kevin Porter Jr. He denies, through a statement from his lawyer, that he broke a vertebra in his girlfriend’s neck after attacking her last week in a Manhattan hotel. According to the New York Post, the defense of the Houston Rockets player – accused of assault and strangulation – has asked the Manhattan district attorney to downgrade the charges from first to second degree, denying the injury.
The NY Post assures that it has had access to documents proving that the fracture of Kysre Gondrezick, a former player for the Indiana Fever in the WNBA, is a birth defect that has nothing to do with the repeated blows Porter Jr. inflicted on her. The Manhattan district refused to comment on the matter while Gondrezick’s defense did not comment, despite having denounced the “misleading and inaccurate” information that had emerged in the case in the previous days.
Even if the severity of the charges were reduced, Kevin Porter Jr. would still face a frightening stack of charges: second-degree strangulation and third-degree assault that could mean a maximum prison sentence of up to 7 years if he is convicted of the crime. The Rockets player was released Tuesday on $75,000 bail and the Texas franchise is already looking to move him. Porter Jr., 23, is set to go to trial Oct. 16 and was previously accused of assaulting a woman in Cleveland, though the charges were never filed.
