MESSINA – The commander of the Port Authority of Messina, Captain Giacomo Cirillo, died suddenly at the age of 55. He had settled in the City of the Strait in November 2022. He was on board his car when, last night (Sunday) he fell ill at the Seresa junction (La Spezia). He had time to pull over. A motorcyclist called for help. The rescuers, who arrived on site, realized the gravity of the situation. And attempts to keep him alive were to no avail.
MAYOR BASILE’S CONDOLENCE
“When faced with death it is always difficult to find the right words. But when it arrives suddenly and strikes someone we know, with whom we have shared programs for the development of the City, according to their respective skills nothing seems adequate to express the profound pain, dismay, and sense of helplessness”. With these words, entrusted to a telegram of condolence addressed to the family, the mayor of Messina Federico Basile wanted to express his condolences and those of the entire municipal administration for the death of the Captain of the Vessel Giacomo Cirillo, who took office in command of the Port Authority of Messina in November 2022.
“The news of the death of Commander Cirillo arrived suddenly and unexpectedly, just in the last few weeks, we had met to discuss some aspects – continues Mayor Basile – with a program of things to do and the agreement to meet again to continue the comparison. There was nothing to predict this enormous tragedy that would happen shortly thereafter. This contributes to increasing dismay and sadness in me, and the entire municipal administration feels these same feelings.
Despite having taken command of the Port Authority of Messina in November 2022 – continues Basile – the captain of the vessel Giacomo Cirillo has demonstrated in this short time of stay in Messina, in addition to the passion and competence of the role held, the profound civic sense and morality, passion and determination, together with the virtues of humanity, brotherhood and solidarity of a man in the service of the State. A memory full of gratitude and esteem remains of his person and his work at the helm of the Captaincy of the city of the Strait”.
