Today we have the news of the arrest of Antonello Lovato, owner of the company for which Satnam Singh worked. The Carabinieri picked him up at his home around lunchtime today, Tuesday 2 July, executing the order of precautionary custody in prison issued by the investigating judge of the Court of Latina. He is charged with “wilful homicide with eventual intent”.
“On behalf of the community I represent, I thank the judiciary and the police for their commitment and their incessant work aimed at shedding light on the death of Satnam Singh,” said today the mayor of Latina, Matilde Celentano.
The accident dates back to June 17th when the young laborer of Indian origins was involved in an accident in the Borgo Santa Maria company, without being rescued he was loaded by his employer into the van and abandoned in front of the house of Castelverde in Cisterna. Only from here were the rescue services alerted and he was taken to the hospital where he died two days later.
“From what I understand from the press, the medical-legal consultancy has ascertained that, if he had been promptly rescued, he would most likely have been saved. It is for this reason, the same one that has deeply touched all the citizens of Latina, that I renew the commitment of the municipal administration to closely follow the developments of this affair and to collaborate with the competent authorities. As mayor – added Celentano – I am aware of the importance of guaranteeing safety and justice for all citizens and of the need to network so that the rights of all workers are always respected. This is why I accepted the request that in recent days came to me from the entire Municipal Council to promote, where the conditions are met, the constitution of the Municipality of Latina as a civil party in the future legal proceedings against Satnam Singh’s employer. I will do the same in other legal proceedings for gangmastering”, Celentano then concluded.
