The mostly flat route encouraged riders to remain cautious, avoid aggressive attacks and conserve energy for the more challenging stages on the programme.

A group finish seemed the most likely outcome, but Girmay surprised everyone. He defeated opponents such as Gaviria and De Lie, who were second and third respectively. Pedersen, another sprinter, also finished fourth.

Thanks to the results obtained in the stage, Richard Carapaz of the EF Education-EasyPost team took the yellow jersey, taking it from Tadey Pogacar. Girmay has shown himself to be an emerging talent in the world of cycling, with some important victories already in his palmarès.

The tribute to the Champion

A long stage, the longest with its 230.8 km, and overall soporific, the one that took place yesterday, Monday 1 July, from Piacenza to Turin. Few attempts to break away, the only real attack of the day was that of Fabian Grellier at 65 kilometers from the finish.

Even though the riders were not giving any particular emotions, a group of fans gathered in the first kilometers of the race (about seventy) in Tortona on a one-kilometer climb to applaud, cheer, recognize a face. The Norwegian Jonas Abrahamsen was the first to cross the finish line of the Gran Premio della Montagna ‘Fausto Coppi – Cote de Tortone’ on the climb of Castello di Tortona (Alessandria). A tribute that the Tour de France wanted to pay to the Campionissimo. This climb brought together fans from all over the world. Some had come from Great Britain, some from Australia and some from Japan. Some were wearing the white jersey of Carpano Coppi, a team that was born thanks to the direct interest of the Campionissimo.
