The Democratic Party of Trieste wishes to express its indignation at the inconsistency demonstrated by the current municipal administration. After leaving migrants on the streets all winter, without a roof to shelter in, among the mud and rats, the administration now awards the golden seal to the Pope. This gesture, aimed at presenting Trieste in an honorable manner to those who have always preached hospitality and solidarity, appears as an obvious attempt to hide the reality of the facts.
The citizens of Trieste are well aware of the true conditions of the most vulnerable people in our city. The golden facade that the administration tries to construct cannot hide the serious problems that afflict our community.
Public health suffers from structural and personnel deficiencies; security is an increasingly worrying issue for residents; nursery schools are insufficient for the needs of families and attempts are being made to resolve the issue by privatizing the service, using public money; and the reception of migrants has been managed in an inhuman, fragmented and unorganized way.
The awarding of the Golden Seal to the Pope, while respecting the figure of the Holy Father, cannot erase the memory of a winter spent ignoring the needs of those seeking refuge and dignity.
