Boom at Elba: it was an asteroid?” A meeting with experts to understand what happened on June 20, 2024 on Elba, when a loud roar shook the island and the Tuscan coast, causing concern among the population.

The phenomenon, accompanied by a brief shaking of the ground, raised fears of an earthquake.

To shed light on the event and answer citizens’ questions, a meeting with experts entitled “Seismic-acoustic event on Elba on 20 June 2024: what happened?” is scheduled, it will be held on July 10, at 5 pm at the council chamber in Piazza Dante Alighieri 1 in Marina di Campo.

Speakers at the event will be Andrea Fiaschi, a doctor in Geology with many years of experience in seismology, an expert in volcanology and head of the Tuscany seismic-acoustic network; Emanuele Marchetti, associate professor in Solid Earth Geophysics. The meeting will be moderated by journalist Michela Gargiulo.

During the meeting, the data collected by the seismic-acoustic instrumentation installed on Elba, which recorded the event with high resolution, will be presented. The experts will discuss the possible causes of the boom, with particular attention to the hypothesis of a meteorite impact.
