DRAM and VRAM Memory: Still Rising Prices?

According to a new report from TrendForce, DRAM prices will see a slight increase in the third quarter of the year, with an expected change between 5 and 13 percent year-over-year, along with a slight increase in VRAM chip prices.

“Conventional” DRAM memory will see an estimated growth of 5-10 percent, while all DRAM products, including HBM chips, will see an increase of 8-13 percent.

This increase is mainly due to the growing demand for server chips and the increase in production of HBM products by major DRAM suppliers, who have decided to raise prices, thus causing the average selling price of DRAM to increase in the third quarter, although variations may differ between different types of memory.

TrendForce noted that PC DRAM chips will continue to see price increases of 3-8 percent, attributed to strong general-purpose server demand and memory suppliers’ increasing focus on HBM chip production.

However, PC customers can expect a smaller price increase than server DRAM buyers, as PC product inventory is higher and consumer demand is not increasing significantly.

Server DRAM chips will see price increases of 8-13 percent, and TrendForce has indicated that warehouses are full of DDR4 chips, signaling that the third quarter focus will be primarily on DDR5.

As for VRAM, again according to TrendForce, it will increase by 3-8 percent, as manufacturers prepare to increase the adoption of new GDDR7 memory chips for the next refresh cycle of gaming GPUs.

TrendForce also said that GDDR7 manufacturing costs are 20-30 percent higher than GDDR6. Finally, prices of older memory products such as DDR3 and DDR4 will increase by 3-8 percent, as Taiwanese manufacturers convert their production capacity to HBM and major memory chip suppliers appear intent on raising prices in every possible area.
