Michael Sarnoski, the director of A Quiet Place: Day 1explained the curious egg scene, talking about why he chose to include it. If you haven’t seen the film, don’t continue reading to avoid possible spoilers.

Throughout the films, monsters have been seen attacking and presumably killing humans, although it’s never entirely clear whether the creatures use the victims as resources to consume. In one scene in A Quiet Place: Day One, Eric (Joseph Quinn) must rescue Frodo the cat and witnesses strange pools of pink liquid, and sees the creatures tear apart a strange egg-like object that they then appear to eat. In an interview with /Film, Michael Sarnoski explained the scene:

I didn’t want the egg thing to be the focus, I didn’t want that scene to be commented on as, ‘Here’s what’s happening,’ and that’s important to point out because it’s not important to Eric at that moment. He’s just trying to save Frodo and you just get a hint that there’s an ecosystem of these creatures around him. But yeah, for me, what I wanted to get at was that you can see all these sort of pools of this pink, glassy liquid, and if you look closely, you can see that there are bodies in those pools. And the idea is that in the other films, you kind of understand that the creatures are taking people and never really saying what they’re doing with them. And I think everyone just thinks, ‘Oh, they’re eating people or something.’ But I like the idea that these creatures are sort of like agricultural ants, using people’s organic material to grow what is their food source, which is sort of these weird melons and eggs and mushrooms that they kind of feed to the little ones. So it’s just a hint, at the end, these are farmers and they have a little family dynamic. I liked the idea, especially coming from the first A Quiet Place, which is really about a family of farmers.

A Quiet Place: Day 1 is in theaters from June 27. Find all the information in our factsheet.
