The Association of Refrigeration Technicians is an official partner of Oko Recherche and the European Commission for the continuous monitoring of the price of HFCs and their availability in the EU.

In Q1/2024, 60 companies from 10 EU Member States (mainly Germany, Poland and Italy) and from all levels of the supply chain (3 gas producers, 17 gas distributors, 29 OEMs, 11 respondents from the service sector and 1 equipment rental company) reported purchase and/or sales prices for HFCs and low GWP alternatives, both in absolute terms (€/kg) and as a price index (with 2014 as the base year). Please note that companies do not report prices for all refrigerants, but only for those relevant to them.

Please note that companies do not report prices for all refrigerants, but only those that are relevant to them.

Figure 1 shows the development of purchase prices of four high GWP HFC refrigerants at the gas distributor level. The data presented include prices reported by three large gas distributors. Prices are indexed to the base year 2014 (=100%).
Figure 2 shows the average purchase prices of alternative refrigerants from Q1/2019 to Q4/2023. The price levels of synthetic refrigerants are higher than those of natural refrigerants. For example, current prices of R448A and R449A are around €29, while R744 and R290 are at €2 and €6, respectively. Prices of all alternatives are increasing, although not to the same extent as traditional HFC blends (see left).

Further results:

  • For the high GWP gases/blends R410A, R134a and R404A, significant increases were observed across the supply chain (20%, 15% and 7% respectively compared to the average price levels reported in Q4/2023), continuing the upward price trend that started in Q4/2020.
  • Overall, the EU refrigerant market appears to be stable in terms of supply (no indication of limited regional refrigerant availability).
  • The price of permits for allowances has varied between €15 and €18.5/t CO2e. On average, permit prices are around €16.5/t CO2, an increase of 6% compared to Q4/2023. On a long-term perspective, for example compared to Q1/2022, allowance prices have increased 2.8 times.
  • Compared to 2014, prices for R404A and R410A are 3.1² to 12.9³ and 2.4² to 11.7³ times higher, depending on the level of the supply chain. For comparison: On the global market, R410A manufacturers’ prices have increased by a factor of 1.2 (Q4/2023 data).
  • Purchase prices for reclaimed R404A currently stand at 109% of the price of virgin material at the utility level.
