An urgent report to Minister Carlo Nordio to request immediate measures on the increase in suicides in prison. This is what the leader of Italia Viva in the Chamber, Davide Faraone, is asking in an urgent question to the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio. “Dear President, the number of suicides in prison is a dramatic one,” we read in the question. “We had already raised the alarm in recent days, indicating that this was a real national emergency and asking for immediate measures from the Government and Parliament, on the dramatic situation of prison overcrowding, we are getting ever closer to the numbers of the famous Torregiani ruling of 2013, of the conditions in which the entire prison community lives (not only prisoners, but also all those who work within the institutions) and on the dramatic increase in suicides in prison: today we have reached 54 prisoners since the beginning of the year, the latest today was a 21-year-old boy in the Paola prison, 5 those of the penitentiary police staff. We are asking once again, especially in view of the summer months, those where volunteer activities decrease and prisoners remain more alone and their days become full of apathy and boredom, which lead to desperation”, adds Nordio. “Despair and loneliness that are a driving force for the most extreme episodes. Already on February 3, 2022, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella in his speech literally said: ‘Dignity is a country where prisons are not overcrowded and ensure the social reintegration of prisoners. This is also the best guarantee of safety’. As of May 31, 2022, there were 54,372 prisoners, in 50,862 regulated places, today we are well beyond those numbers with over 14,000 people detained without a regulated place, increasingly difficult living conditions for prisoners and extremely tiring work for prison workers.
