“Regarding murals, I really believe that Councilor Luca Zandonella has very narrow views. Murals are not just paintings on walls, but expressions of culture, identity and community. They often represent voices and stories that would otherwise go unheard. Limiting or disapproving this art form means closing ourselves off from a vibrant and inclusive dimension of our society. I invite Zandonella to consider how murals can enrich our urban environment, promoting dialogue, beauty and a sense of belonging for all citizens. Urban art, like murals, has always had the task of stimulating reflection and dialogue. The murals of Piacenza, including those depicting women with veils and texts in different languages, are artistic expressions that represent cultural diversity and inclusion. The “Human Store” mural celebrates the meeting of different cultures, promoting a message of respect and integration. In an increasingly globalized world, it is important to value different cultural identities and recognize that our society is enriched by the presence of different traditions. The Tarasconi administration firmly believes that knowing and respecting one’s roots is fundamental. At the same time, it is equally important to be open to comparison with other cultures, to draw positive lessons and build a more cohesive and inclusive community. Finally, it is crucial to distinguish between openness to intercultural dialogue and the uncritical acceptance of all aspects of other cultures. Respect for local traditions remains a priority, but this must not prevent us from appreciating the positive things other cultures have to offer. I hope this explanation can clarify the positive intent behind these murals and promote a constructive discussion about our community and its future.”
