ISCHIA, AFTER THE COLLAPSE IN HOSPITAL, MAYORS ASK FOR A MEETING WITH ASL AND REGION: “SERIOUS EMERGENCY SITUATION”

Following the serious collapse of a part of the false ceiling at the entrance hall of the Rizzoli hospital in Lacco Ameno, which occurred on the afternoon of 17 June, the six mayors of the island of Ischia, through a joint note, asked for an urgent meeting at director of the ASL Napoli 2 Nord Iervolino, to the general director for health protection and coordination of the Regional Health Service Antonio Postiglione and to the President De Luca, together with the director of the ASL Mario Iervolino with the Prefect Michele of Bari to discuss the critical issues of the Lacchese hospital . In addition to the accident, we are also asked to talk about the “chronic shortage of personnel” and much more. Here is the full text of the document signed by the six leading citizens of the island who, following the collapse and serious criticality of the Anna Rizzoli Hospital in Lacco Ameno on the island of Ischia, sent an “Urgent request for a meeting with the Mayors representing the local communities”.

“In relation to the object, previous correspondence and the long-standing problems of the Anna Rizzoli Hospital are followed up, to point out, lastly, the serious consequences of the collapse of the false ceiling in the hall of the Rizzoli Hospital frequented by patients, medical staff, paramedic, family members of patients, foreign guests, collapse which only fortunately avoided casualties among patients and staff, but which could have caused them due to the extent of the damage to the structure. The ASL Na 2 Nord communicated that the accident led to the need to provide care to a user who suffered minor injuries and to a young pregnant woman due to the fright she felt and that for precautionary reasons three rooms in the Surgery department were temporarily cleared and the patients transferred to other departments. Access to the hospital from the main entrance is suspended for safety reasons. The Mayor of the Municipality of Lacco Ameno with his ordinance n. 14 of 18.06.2024 ordered, among other things, the temporary inhibition of the use of the CUP room and the room above used as an inpatient unit for the orthopedic surgery department as per protocol. 37815 of 17.06.204 of the Provincial Fire Brigade Command. It is hardly necessary to point out that for an island of over sixty thousand resident inhabitants and hundreds of thousands of tourists who flock to it for six months of the year, the chronic shortage of staff, the limitation of the sampling point to just one and the placement of professional healthcare collaborators to replace those absent due to transfer, illness, or impediment, in conjunction with the suspension of the expansion works which now dates back to 2023, now places the Anna Rizzoli Hospital in a situation of permanent emergency. Added to this is the the use of containers where the changing rooms of 118 staff, drivers, and various depots are located, which was supposed to represent an emergency solution, has continued over time with serious inconvenience for the operators. The lack of space has repercussions on the lack of waiting rooms for the radiology and laboratory departments and the consequent clutter of corridors with people standing waiting and furnishings temporarily placed. The Orthopedics and Cardiology departments also present some critical issues linked to the lack of staff with the consequent need to often transfer patients to mainland facilities. As representatives of the local communities, the Mayors express the deepest concern for the situation of health services as it is taking shape in the middle of the 2024 tourist season on an island that has seen a progressive reduction in the emergency room facilities and the staff of the Anna Rizzoli Hospital, expressly requesting the authorities in question to evaluate the possibility of convening a specific meeting with all the Mayors with every courteous urgency of the island of Ischia to discuss the critical issues highlighted”. The mayors are confident, they say, in “usual and active feedback”.
