Sorrento, weddings with a view of the Gulf of Naples: tripled rates for tourists

Couples from all over the world reaching out Sorrento and surrounding areas to pronounce the fateful “yes” in dream locations immersed in postcard scenarios that animate the collective imagination. Panoramic terraces, ancient buildings, gardens from a thousand and one nights. These are the places most loved by the betrothed. Obviously those who do not want or cannot get married in church according to liturgical canons.

And the identity card since the diocese of Sorrento-Castellammare does not allow marriage with a religious rite to foreigners.

Since there are hundreds of engaged couples who dream of fulfilling their dream of love on the Coast, we must be satisfied with the protocol envisaged for civil unions. And on this front, when choosing the most romantic corner you are spoiled for choice.

There are two sites that are most successful: the fourteenth century cloister of San Francesco in Sorrento and the belvedere of Villa Fondi in Piano di Sorrento. Hundreds of couples arrive here to exchange promises of a life together.

In Sorrento alone in 2024 there will be at least 400 civil rites, mostly of foreigners from the United Kingdom and the USA, which will guarantee a substantial revenue for the municipal coffers. Price list varies depending on the location chosen (cloister of San Francesco, Town Hall, Museo Correale or Villa Fiorentino park, headquarters of the Sorrento Foundation) and the day. And from next year the administration of mayor Massimo Coppola has decided to review the prices which have not undergone adjustments since 2015.

Residents will continue to have the ceremony for free during the opening hours of the Municipality. The costs for celebrations on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons (250 euros) and on Saturdays and Sundays (350 euros) are also unchanged for the people of Sorrento. Increases only for those arriving from outside. During office hours the rate goes from 600 to 750 euros, while in the afternoons when employees do not return the rate rises from 800 to 1,000 euros with the peak of 1,200 euros – instead of the current 1,000 – on Saturdays and Sundays. For events other than weddings the amount goes from 500 to 1,000 euros, with a 10 percent reduction for so-called “symbolic weddings”, when no documents need to be prepared and the presence of the civil registrar is not necessary.

Weddings, however, are a sector that ensures income not only for municipalities. A business that generates a turnover worth millions of euros. And one of the main expenditure items is that relating to the banquet rooms. «Couples come to us from all continents and in some cases the budget they make available is almost unlimited», he explains Teresa Vanacoreevents manager of the 5 star hotel Bellevue Syrene and the relay Cape Santa Fortunatatwo splendid historic homes managed by the entrepreneur Elsa Russo overlooking the bay of Sorrento.

«Once the pandemic was over we started again with good numbers – he adds Teresa Vanacore -. In 2023, between our two locations, we hosted one hundred receptions and for this year we are on the same line with booklet bookings”.

Especially those arriving from abroad are looking for a point of reference they can completely rely on. «Almost all our customers prefer that we take care of the entire organization of their most beautiful day – concludes Vanacore -. From photographers to videographers, from beauty centers to hairdressers, from florists to chauffeur-driven rentals, we offer what we believe to be the best choices in order to make the wedding celebrated in Sorrento unforgettable.”
