Khalid bin Salman has denied any involvement of the Saudi state in the case of the disappearance of the well-known journalist

Khalid bin Salman (KBS), current Saudi defense chief and former ambassador to the US, is a trusted advisor and brother of the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman. KBS is said to be involved in the plot to assassinate the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as he would have suggested that the latter complete some official formalities at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Where, on October 2, 2018, a group of Saudi assassins allegedly set a deadly ambush for him. Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia in 2017 for the United States in an attempt to avoid being persecuted and arrested. Indeed, during KBS’s tenure as Saudi ambassador to the United States (from April 2017 to February 2019), the Saudi government also enlisted several Saudi citizens residing in the US to spy on, harass and intimidate Saudi activists present in both US and Canadian territory .

Before assassinating Khashoggi, the Saudi prince Mohammed bin Salman, in addition to relying on KBS, he would also have relied on his close advisor, Saud al-Qahtani. In an attempt to intimidate the well-known journalist, he even prevented Khashoggi’s son from being able to travel abroad, or offered the journalist money to stop his criticism of the Saudi prince. That is, until 2018, when the Saudi journalist was forced to go to the Saudi embassy in Washington DC to obtain a replacement for his passport which had mysteriously disappeared from his home in Virginia. At the embassy, KBS met with Khashoggi and asked him about his work as a journalist for the Washington Post.

But KBS also played a key role in the coverage of the Khashoggi murder, denying that it had ordered the Saudi journalist to travel to Istanbul. Furthermore, KBS also lied to the US government, Congress and the media by claiming that the Saudi government was sincerely looking for its “friend,” calling the claim that the Saudi government may have kidnapped or killed Khashoggi as “absolutely false and unfounded.”
