investigation into the death of the 28-year-old prisoner –

The Genoa Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the death of a 28-year-old prisoner in Marassi prison. The young man hanged himself in his cell and, despite help, died 48 hours later at San Martino.

The public prosecutor Andrea Ranalli has opened a case to investigate the death as a consequence of another crime. Investigators are evaluating whether the officers’ intervention was timely and whether the inmate should have been placed in a different section or facility.

According to what was reported by the police union Uilpa, the prisoner had manipulated the lock on the gate to delay the intervention of the officers before hanging himself. The young man, with no significant criminal record, was serving a sentence for petty theft and was due to be released in three months. However, following a previous arrest for resisting prison officers, he had negotiated a ten-month sentence, delaying his release.

The inmate was found hanging by officers and a nurse last Wednesday, and despite rescue attempts, his condition deteriorated rapidly. After two days in intensive care, the young man unfortunately died.

The ongoing investigation will seek to shed light on all aspects of the matter, including details of the previous arrest and the evaluation of the procedures adopted by the prison officers.
