The Azzurri’s journey continues in the first round of the 2024 edition of Wimbledon. After yesterday’s victories of Sinner, Berrettini, Fognini and Sonego and the elimination of Mattia Arnaldi, today’s program includes another five Italian tennis players. The first to take to the field was Luca Nardi: the Italian lost in three sets to the Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry (n.30 ATP) with a score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 and was eliminated.
Among the many matches of the day there were also some challenges with great champions such as Djokovic, Zverev, Tsistsipas and Hurkacz (who won against Albot). And in the meantime the news arrives that Andy Murray will give up playing the singles. The Scottish tennis player, recovering from yet another physical problem (an operation for a cyst in his back) in his last appearance at the London slam has decided to withdraw: he was supposed to face the Czech Tomas Machac today. He is still in the running in the doubles with his brother Jamie. “It was a difficult decision to make – Murray’s staff said in a note – Unfortunately, despite the hard work during the rehabilitation following the operation that took place just over a week ago, Andy has made the very difficult decision not to play the singles this year. He is very disappointed, but he has confirmed that he will play doubles with Jamie and he is looking forward to competing at Wimbledon for the last time”.
