Nick Kyrgios occupies 671st place in the ATP rankings with just 50 points under his belt: the Australian tennis player has sunk in the international rankings and the glories that led him to play a Wimbledon final and reach thirteenth position in the world rankings are now far behind him.
The 30-year-old slipped this far back because of three years of substantial competitive inactivity in singles: in 2023 he lost the first round of the ATP 250 in Stuttgart against the Chinese Wu, in 2024 he never took to the court and in 2025 he was limited to just five matches (four defeats and the only success against the American McDonald in the first round of the Masters 1000 in Miami).
The 50 points he counts at the moment are made up as follows: 10 for his participation in the Australian Open (he lost on his debut against the British Fearnley), 10 for his presence at the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells (he retired during the second set of the first round against the Dutch van de Zandschulp) and 30 for the aforementioned journey in Florida.
Today Nick Kyrgios defeated Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka by 6-3, 6-3 in the much talked about match Battle of the Sexes staged on the hard courts of Riyadh and from January 5th he will be involved in the ATP 250 in Brisbane, where he was invited thanks to a wild-card. At the moment he could not participate in the Australian OpenSlam which will be staged in Melbourne from 18 January to 1 February.
Today’s success against the world number 1, showing a decent state of form, could however allow him to deserve a wild card for the most prestigious home tournament. Its competitiveness at the highest levels, however, is still to be evaluated: will the organizers admit it by virtue of the name and its media importance or will they require guarantees of a competitive level?
