Sony’s revenues are growing, how is PlayStation Plus doing?

As reported by Mat Piscatella of Circana (formerly NPD Group), in March 2024 the PS5 sold 7% more than the PS4 in the USA and 66% more than the PS3 in the same period of the life cycle, or in the forty-first month of presence on the market.

2023 appears to have been the peak year for PlayStation 5 in the US and as Sony has repeatedly reiterated, sales are now expected to continue to decline year after year. For the current fiscal year (which will end on March 31, 2025) forecasts speak of 18 million PS5s distributed.

In the past few hours, Sony has published its financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, in which there is evidence of growth in the PlayStation business. PS5 missed the sales targets set by a whisker (around 200,000 consoles) however Sony can console itself with net sales of 72.2 billion dollars with growth of +12% on an annual basis.

The Game & Network Services division, which includes PlayStationgenerated revenues of $27.5 billion with profits of 1.9 billion, both figures are up 17% and 16% respectively on an annual basis. Revenues from services grow and reach 3.5 billion dollars (+17%), these also include the various tiers of PlayStation Plus: Sony hasn’t communicated the number of subscribers for months now therefore it is not easy to understand what the real performance of Plus is, since other digital services are also collected under this business branch. PlayStation Plus subscribers are 47.4 million, but this figure has not been updated since April 30, 2023 and is the latest communicated by Sony.

In the last 12 months, Sony sold 286.4 million PlayStation video games (PS4 and PS5) of these 39.7 million are first party, a decrease compared to 43.5 million last year. A decline that is explained by the lack of major blockbusters launched by the publisher (it’s unclear whether Sony considers Helldivers 2 a first party game or not) as well as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Just Arrowhead’s game was one of the protagonists of the last fiscal year: Helldivers 2 sold 12 million copies, becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation game ever.
