TSMC is facing severe pressure on its production capacity due to the explosion in demand related to artificial intelligence. In particular, the supply of 2 nanometer wafers is extremely limited, with production capacity already full booked until the end of 2026.
This situation has pushed the Taiwanese semiconductor giant to plan to increase the prices of the most advanced nodes for four consecutive years, starting from 1 January 2026. According to what was reported by industrial sources, TSMC has already informed its customers that they will have to prepare to support these progressive price increases.
Increases in arrivals for 4 consecutive years: TSMC data
The first increase expected for 2026 is expected to be small within a single digit percentagealthough the exact percentage will vary based on the volumes ordered and the contractual agreements made with each customer. However, some research companies estimate that, overall, prices will increase on advanced nodes they could fluctuate between 3% and 10%.
Samsung benefits from rising DRAM prices, but experts warn: not enough to challenge TSMC
The pressure doesn’t just affect the 2nm manufacturing process. Even the 3nm node, which should reach the full capacity by 2026risks facing a lack of supply. For this reason, TSMC is reportedly evaluating a 3% price increase also for this technology.
TSMC’s “suffering of success.”
The company is in fact “suffering from success“: AI-driven demand has led not only to factory saturation, but also to labor shortages and a strong increase in capital expenditure. In this context, price increases represent a fundamental tool for maintaining profitability and supporting the enormous investments required by new generation technologies.
Among the main beneficiaries of the initial 2nm capability is Apple, which in 2024 accounted for approximately 24% of TSMC’s total revenue. To answer the demand, TSMC has started the construction of three new plants dedicated to 2nmbut it will take some time before production can reach adequate levels.
