Do you like souls likes? But above all, you like the term soulslike? We ask this because the creative director of Aggro Crab, Caelan Pollock, recently spoke with Game Informer and stated that using this term is actually limiting developers a lot.
Let’s remember that Aggro Crab he’s the co-creator of Peak (the cooperative climbing game) but before that he was the author of Another Crab’s Treasure, an action role-playing game that can’t be called anything other than a soulslike.
What Pollock said about “soulslike”
Pollock said: “I think calling games ‘soulslike’ has stuck a lot of developers in a loop where they recreated Dark Souls again and again. I believe the best Dark Souls-style game has already been created and it’s called Dark Souls.”
The discussions on what makes a soulslike a soulslike never end and everyone has their own point of view, but in general when a game wants to be similar to Dark Souls, it can be perceived even without the need to use one term or another.

According to Pollock, however, what makes Dark Souls truly great it’s not so much that it’s a soulslike, but that it’s a “deeply flawed game and that’s why people love it and that’s why it has affected players and the entire industry so deeply. I think when you try to imitate every aspect of that experience, you’re not going to be able to create something that’s worthy of attention.”
