Twelve years have passed since the day that changed his life forever Michael Schumacher. Twelve years in which the champion’s family raised a curtain of privacy, to try to face the battle away from the spotlight and avoid speculation. In this period there have been rumors that have fueled hope, but also episodes that have attempted to violate the family’s confidentiality.
That December 29th that stopped time
Everything changed on December 29, 2013, just a year after his retirement. On holiday in the French Alps with the family, a day of skiing turns into a nightmare due to a off-piste accident. A violent impact with a rock causes serious injury head trauma to the champion who, despite the helmet, is rushed to the hospital and placed in a medically induced coma.
From that day on, the champion with seven world titles and 91 victories disappeared from the public scene. After months of intensive care and the transfer first to Switzerland and then to the family residence, Michael Schumacher never appeared again. Only very few people, chosen with extreme care, had access to him.
Confidentiality and the shadow of extortion
The Schumacher family imposed a clear line from the beginning: to protect Michael and guarantee dignity to a health condition which, even today, remains shrouded in maximum confidentiality. A difficult decision, carried out with absolute coherence by Corinna Schumacher, which became the true pillar of this phase of family life.
Over the years, however, there has been no shortage of attempts to violate that privacy. From fake journalists disguised as priests to one of the most serious cases: the extortion attempt which involved a former family security officer. Together with two accomplices, the man had threatened to spread hundreds of photos, videos and medical documents online in exchange for 15 million euros. An episode that profoundly shook public opinion and which ended with a conviction by the German justice system.
These episodes have further strengthened the family’s determination to maintain maximum control over information, avoiding any form of spectacularization.
The Schumacher legacy
Twelve years later, Michael Schumacher remains a very strong presence in the world of motorsport, even without appearing. His name continues to be a point of reference for drivers, teams and enthusiasts. This is demonstrated by the respect with which he is still cited in the paddock today, but also by the way in which his legacy lives on through his son Mick.
