The Portuguese judiciary, which had already ordered the arrest of former president Luis Felipe Vieira in 2021, is now returning to the attack on the management of the club. The former champion of Fiorentina and Milan is also in the sights

The Portuguese press has announced that the judiciary has opened an investigation into the sports club of Benfica, a well-known Portuguese soccer team, and the members of the board of directors of the 2016/2020 mandate and still in office. The first press rumors were confirmed by the sports club itself. Among the suspects there is also Manuel Rui Costa, who played in Italy for years, first at Fiorentina and then at Milan,
and currently the president of the club to replace Luis Filipe Vieira, who had already resigned in the summer of 2021 after being arrested as part of another investigation for fraud and tax fraud.

In the current investigation, which developed from the investigators’ examination of hacked emails, Benfica is accused of having benefited from manipulated results in several matches. The club statement declares total openness to collaborate with the competent authorities. Manuel Rui Costa, after wearing the Benfica shirt for a long time in his early career, became manager of the same club in 2008. During these years, having arrived at the presidency in 2021, the former Fiorentina and Milan player led the team to win: 6 league titles, 2 Portuguese Cups, 7 League Cups and 4 Portuguese Super Cups.
