The British campaign begins with a victory Casper Ruud a WimbledonThe Norwegian tennis player, in his first match of the season on grass, beat the Australian qualifier Alex Bolt 7-6(2) 6-4 6-4 in two hours and sixteen minutes and earned access to the second round, where he will be faced with Fabio Fognini.
The current world number eight showed some difficulties on a surface notoriously unsuitable for him: Ruud conceded ten break points, saving nine, and in the end managed to convert the opportunities conceded by an opponent who was certainly inferior to him.
In a press conference, however, the former number two said he felt well but had spent a few weeks weakened by a physical problem that occurred after reaching the semi-final at Roland Garros.
Casper Ruud’s words
The Scandinavian tennis player explained to journalists how in the weeks preceding Wimbledon he suffered from a strange virus that put his presence at the All England Club in doubt.
“I felt ill in Paris and when I returned home I had a very upset stomach for a week. I had no appetite and was in bed all day. I went to the hospital for some tests and they told me I had a strange parasite in my body.” Ruud said.
The three-time Grand Slam finalist added: “I’m not sure how I got it, but I was told that maybe the water I showered with was contaminated. It took me a while to get it out and I doubted I would make it in time, but now I feel good.”.
A problem that now seems to have been overcome for Ruud, who on Wednesday will be engaged in a difficult challenge with Fabio Fognini, who beat the French lucky loser Luca Van Assche in the first round.
