Men’s Road Race Course Elite Italian Championships 2024

Florence – Sesto Fiorentino (228.0 km)

The departure is set in the magnificent Piazzale Michelangelo, in the heart of Florence. The race will leave the capital of Tuscany and then head towards Valdisieve and Mugello for the first straight stretch of this test. Once you arrive at Scarperiaa ring will be tackled which will take the runners to pass twice the climb of the legendary Arrabbiata (500 meters at 9%), which runs alongside the racetrack, before heading towards the climb of The Crosses of Calenzano (2.2 km at 5.4%) positioned approximately halfway. At that point the descent towards the town of Calenzano will take the runners to the foot of the first ascent of via di Baroncoliwhich will probably be the key point of the race, given that it will be tackled a total of five times during the final circuit.

After a treacherous descent and a first passage under the arrival banner, located in the town of Sesto Fiorentino, the 16 kilometer circuit will begin, to be covered four times, which will once again include the climb of Via dei Baroncoli, also known as the Collina climb, 3.6 kilometers long and with an average gradient of 6.2%. The last passage at the top of the challenging asperity will take place when there are only 8.6 kilometers left to the final finish line, almost all downhill and with a final straight about 800 meters long where we will be able to see a narrow sprint between a selected group of runners or the catwalk triumph of a lone attacker.

Net of any changes to the starting field compared to what was initially communicated, the route, lively and selective, calls out several riders suitable for hilly classics. One of these it is definitely Alberto Bettiol (Ef Education-EasyPost), who was riding in excellent condition until the problems that put him out of action at the recent Tour of Switzerland. The Tuscan still races at home and also has the right experience to deal with the inevitable numerical inferiority in which he may find himself in the race (he is the only standard bearer of his team). Cross-country ability and endurance, as well as a more than discreet quick start, make him a certainly authoritative favourite.

The type of route also seems favorable for Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon-Ag2R La Difesa), another man who knows how to hold on very well on not too long climbs and who has excellent cross-country skiing skills, as also demonstrated in the last Giro d’Italia. For him too, the “isolation” issue must be taken into account, but the Venetian is also a highly experienced runner. The menu seems the right one for the first big seasonal ring of Andrea Bagioli: the Lidl-Trek representative is looking for ice-breaking success with the new colors and the Tuscan route seems tailor-made to suit his characteristics, should the condition be that of great occasions.

He who arrives at the appointment on the wings of enthusiasm is Giovanni Aleotti (Bora-hansgrohe), protagonist of a brilliant week at the Tour of Slovenia, which he completed as the overall winner. The Emilian rider should rely on some coups, perhaps solitary, but particular tactical contexts could allow him to try the coup. In dry races, on rough courses, the name of Vincenzo Albanese (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) must always be taken into consideration: if the Campanian manages to hold his own along the repeated ascents of Via dei Baroncoli, he will be an uncomfortable customer for everyone in the end, especially if he arrives in a small group. Same goes for Simone Velasco (Astana Qazaqstan), who will be the defending champion and who will therefore be doubly motivated by wanting to defend the title won in 2023 in the best possible way. The Elba native is also an athlete who knows how to assert himself in small groups made up of relatively few units and could also find the the support of some color companions throughout the day.

Astana will also have in the race, among others Samuele Battistella, another runner with a decent quick start and also capable of attempting long-range attacks. Attention, always in the “Kazakh” group to another potential attacker, Christian Scaroniit’s at Davide Ballerini, for whom the path might be a little too tough, but who has shown that he is making a clear recovery, after the physical problems suffered in recent months. Another interesting “patrol” is that of the UAE Team Emirates, which will only have three runners in the race, but of undoubted importance: Diego Ulissi must always be taken into account on days like this, Filippo Baroncini showed good signs in the time trial and Alessandro Covi he has the right characteristics to make a difference with some personal initiative, perhaps far from the finish line.

An attack that can make great selection is the one he will have to rely on Nicola Conci (Alpecin-Deceuninck), a rider who can do very well on a climb like the one on which the race will presumably be decided. Attacks can also be expected from Walter Calzoni, Gianluca Brambilla And Filippo Concathe trio on which the hopes of Q36.5 are mainly based, the tactics of could be more conservative Matteo Trentin (Tudor), who has from his experience, resistance and also that bit of speed that could be fundamental in an arrival in more or less restricted ranks.

Lorenzo Rota (Intermarché-Wanty) instead has qualities that can allow him to move across multiple scenarios and an eye should be given, with the same colors as the Bergamo, to the young Francesco Busatto, capable of excellent ideas at the end of very tight and selective races. Also worth considering Davide de Pretto (Jayco-AlUla), who showed qualities very suitable for such a path: the Venetian will also have alongside Filippo Zana And Alessandro de Marchi, who will have the opportunity to play their cards, but who, in the event of a tactical final, will also be able to make themselves available to the younger teammate. Attention must be paid, in any case, to what he wants to try to do Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) and the race conduct of Davide Formolo (Movistar), Gianni Moscon (Soudal-QuickStep), Edoardo Affini (Visma|Lease a Bike) e Stefano Oldani (Cofidis), all runners who have the right skills to carve out important spaces in the race.

It is inevitable, then, that the “large numbers” fielded by the three Italian Professional teams could represent a factor of great specific weight in the economy of the race. The Vf Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè will have 17 riders in the race: it remains to be seen what the possible team strategy may be, but Filippo Fiorelli, Martin Marcellusi And Alessandro Tonelli they have the right characteristics to go all the way to playing their cards, in various types of scenarios. Less numerous, but equally fierce, is the Polti-Kometa group, which will probably try to move from afar with Mirco Maestri, Davide Bais And Mattia Bais; that’s difficult Giovanni Lonardi manages to absorb all the various bumps along the route, but if he succeeds, the sprinter from Verona would be a tough nut to crack for everyone in the final.

Strength in numbers is also on the side of Corratec-Vini Fantini, who is chasing a success that also marks the turning point of the season. We rely on the determination of Valerio Conti, to the energy of Davide Baldaccini and, possibly, to the experience of Kristian Sbaragli, who could hold his own until the end and then take advantage of his quick start. They will try to fight for important results, even if they are “only” high placings, furthermore, Thomas Pesenti (JCL Team Ukyo), Marco Tizza (Bingoal WB) e Sergio Meris (MBH Bank Colpack Ballan).
