Giulio Zeppieri advances to Roland Garros, eliminating Adrian Mannarino. Darderi debuts with a three-set victory at Roland Garros

Giulio Zeppieri replicated the 2023 result at Roland Garros, winning the debut of the 2024 edition against the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, number 20 on the scoreboard, with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 in two and a half hours of play. Despite a difficult start, the Italian was able to exploit his opponent’s weaknesses on clay, gaining access to the second round where he will face the winner of Alexei Popyrin and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Zeppieri struggled in the first half, committing 19 unforced errors and allowing Mannarino to win the set. However, the Roman was able to react promptly, breaking the break at the start of the second set and dominating the game from then on.
Mannarino, supported by the crowd on court 7, began to lose his composure, hitting the ground after suffering another break. Zeppieri, increasingly master of the court, won the second set without particular difficulties and conceded only one game to his opponent in the third set.
The Frenchman’s collapse continued in the fourth set, with big errors such as a smash into the net. Zeppieri maintained his serve with authority, waiting for Mannarino to put an end to his suffering.

The Roman tennis player significantly improved the quality of his game from the second set onwards, conceding few points on serve and constantly putting pressure on the Frenchman, obtaining 12 break points. Of the 81 total points won by Zeppieri, 60 came in the last three sets, demonstrating the clear performance gap between the two players.

Luciano Darderi he started his adventure at Roland Garros on the right foot, overtaking the Australian Rinky Hijikata in three sets with the score of 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-1. Even though he was the favourite, the Italian-Argentine showed great solidity, managing the crucial moments of the match in the best possible way and canceling a set point in the tiebreak of the second set.
In the second round he will challenge one of McDonald or Griekspoor [26].
Darderi imposed his game as a true ground thrower, trying to push his opponent away from the court with powerful shots and deep angles, as well as responding aggressively. After winning the first set 6-3, the second set proved to be more balanced, with Hijikata trying to take time away from Darderi by getting closer to the net. In the tiebreak, Darderi canceled a set point and prevailed 8-6 thanks to an error by the Australian.

Strengthened by the two sets of advantage, Darderi dominated the third set, immediately setting the break and showing his entire repertoire, from the rebounds to the powerful flying forehands. With great tenacity, the blue player closed the set 6-1, expressing his best tennis.
Darderi’s excellent performance is also demonstrated by the numbers: 45 winners against only 24 free errors, 9 aces and 78% of points won with the first serve, as well as 64% with the second serve (against 40% for Hijikata) .
