Page 2 | Grande Torino owned, Cairo at its last stage: 2026 the turning point year

Stadium ownership: now or never. And it is not a simple way of speaking, if we consider the official, institutional path designed at the time by the Lo Russo council for the stadium Tour. It was last February when an ad hoc resolution was approved for the possible sale of the plant during 2026, if not already at the end of 2025. Then, in May, the mayor announced: «The Revenue Agency has just informed me that the 38 million mortgage pending on the Grande Torino Olympic stadium since 2005 will not be renewed: from next July 2nd the facility will be free». Free to be put up for sale by the City and purchased by a private individual, that is, naturally following a complex and certainly not rapid bureaucratic-legal process, as is well known in Italy when it comes to stadiums. A process, in any case, with Torino as the first potential recipient, obviously, given the use of the facility intended for football. Cairo at the last stage in 2026, then? In a certain sense yes, if he really wants to buy the plant Great Turin as granata president, to finally provide the club with its own stadium.

Cairo’s words

It was August when the president said: «The objective of taking the stadium is linked to the development of the facilities and there are no ulterior motives linked to a sale of the Torino. Speaking of conditions, I expect similar ones to those we had at the time Juventus». Then, in September: «I’m looking into buying the stadium. Now that the Municipality has obtained that the mortgage on the Olimpico Grande Torino is no longer registered, this possibility actually exists. I will talk about it with the mayor as soon as possible, certainly quickly. It’s something I’d like to do. The stadium ownership is certainly an opportunity that must be pursued». In October, a month later, he returned to talk about the club’s fate, which obviously could be intertwined with the stadium deal: «Yes, I confirm that I have given my willingness to sell the Bull, but there are no negotiations underway because there are no offers». In November: «I’m thinking about owning the stadium and I’m evaluating the project together with the mayor of Turin. I hope it’s possible» (always with reference to economic conditions).

“We are working for the stadium”

And the mayor himself, recently, just before Natale: «We are working to give Torino its own stadium. Yes, the objective is to create the conditions for the stadium to become the property of the Granata. We are working to strengthen the presence of the Granata club inside the Olimpico Grande Torino stadium». L’advisor Practiceofficially appointed by the Municipality in recent months, is required to draw up an appraisal both to identify the current value of the stadium (starting point for the possible sale) and to indicate the possible future new rental fee, in the event that the facility is not sold, but rented again as it has always been in recent years (for 500 thousand euros per season, as per the annual fee for Torino). The report was expected in the autumn, but it appears that it has not yet been officially delivered to the Council, so much so that it has not yet been released publicly by the top management of the City. Among politicians in the Municipality there is talk of unforeseen delays, due to the complexity of the issue. The bottom line is that in any case the times have expanded. The value of the possible starting price of the stadium will emerge from the official appraisal of the advisor Praxi and will be the fundamental indication for the negotiations and/or an auction over the next few months, in particular considering the possible developments in the spring.
