Varney’s lightning run: goal for the blue in Exeter Chiefs-Leicester Tigers

For Stephen Varney it’s a golden moment. The scrum-half of the Italian national team is doing a lot in Prem Rugby with his Exeter Chiefs, a club which also includes Andrea Zambonin and (the currently injured) Ross Vintcent. The attacking midfielder earned a contract renewal and scored in the last match against Leicester Tigers, also following up on what he did the previous week against Saracens.

The realization comes in the 73rd minute (from minute 2:42 of the video). Varney starts the action in the middle of the field, with the result 17-7 for his team, but with still 7 minutes to play. The drums of the “Chiefs” backs and forwards start moving.

Fisilau creates the break by piercing the opponent’s defensive net, the scrum half follows the action receiving the ball just under 40 meters from the goal line, with a motorway in front of him. He takes the free lane, accelerates and arrives between the posts exploding with joy. The points arrive which definitively close the game, which then ends at 24-10 by Exeter.

Varney, in addition to the goal, scores the entire match with 80 minutes out of 80 played, while Andrea Zambonin, on the second line, makes his contribution by playing 69 minutes before being replaced.
