Prem Rugby: Newcastle Red Bulls secure former All Blacks

The Newcastle Falcons, now sponsored by the Red Bulls, have pulled off a great transfer coup which could also have positive repercussions for Steve Borthwick’s England national team.

In recent days the Prem Rugby club has made it official that a former All Blacks player (14 appearances with the Tuttineri shirt) will arrive next season on a three-year contract.

I Newcastle Red Bulls ingaggiano un ex All Blacks

The club from the North East of England has announced that it has signed Hoskins Sotutu, a flanker born in 1998 currently playing for the Blues.

The New Zealand player, Fijian on his father’s side and English on his mother’s side, won Super Rugby with the Auckland franchise in 2024, also winning the title of MVP of the season. In 80 games in the Pacific tournament he scored 31 tries.

The English club’s General Manager, Neil McIlroy, said: “This is an important signing that brings a lot of firepower to the club. Hoskins was a player much in demand by other teams but he has seen what is being planned at Newcastle Red Bulls and wants to be part of it. He is an X-factor player who will have a big impact on the pitch. The prestige of the club and the Gallagher Premiership as a whole will grow enormously thanks to his arrival and this is a signing that shows we mean business.”

The arrival of the New Zealand third line could also open up new scenarios for Steve Borthwick’s England. The 27-year-old flanker, having not been called up for three consecutive years with the All Blacks, will be eligible for the national team from next year.

“I’m excited to commit to the Newcastle Red Bulls project and participate in the Gallagher Premiership. The club has made it clear to me how ambitious it is and I can’t wait to get started,” said Hoskins Sotutu.
