It had become the nightmare of shopkeepers in Ostia. A lone robber, armed with an axe, who had struck in a pizzeria and a bar. The protagonist is a 50-year-old Roman, arrested by the police.

Hatchet in hand, face covered from time to time by the hood of his sweatshirt and a balaclava. The bandit had now become the terror of the shopkeepers of municipality X. Two raids in five days which had created alarm on the coast. The first appearance on the scene took place in a pizzeria by the slice. The criminal, “with a Roman accent” – as the victims described – went into action on 11 December in Piazza Gregoriopoli, in Ostia Antica, where he had the day’s takings delivered (around 500 euros) and then ran away on foot. On December 16th, however, Amerigo Vespucci stopped in Piazza. Always armed, he threatened the employees of a bar and then fled with the proceeds (around 300 euros).

The area agents have reconstructed his strategy point by point and the geographical mapping of the hits carried out. What framed him were the audio and video frames extrapolated from the video surveillance systems of the individual businesses targeted, which, in the aftermath of the last attack, had gone viral on the web. The strong Roman accent and the clothing – camouflage trousers and a sweatshirt with the logo of a sports club – were not lost on an acquaintance, who recognized him and contacted the police.
50-year-old arrested
The man, already known for his drug-related history, was found in his home. At the time of his arrest, he was wearing the same “work outfit” used to capture his loot. The fifty-year-old was then taken to prison on charges of aggravated robbery.
