Fight against illegal parking, more powers provided for traffic auxiliaries

Traffic officials who will be able to raise fines “not to make money” but to guarantee “the fluidity of traffic”. Councilor Eugenio Patanè said this during a joint hearing with the Mobility and Budget commissions. The owner of Rome’s transport, in fact, illustrated the now imminent launch of the plan to increase the number of blue stalls in the city and, on this occasion, also spoke of the administration’s intention to expand the powers of the auxiliaries.

Increase in blue stripes in Rome

In August 2025, in fact, the Capitoline council approved a resolution with which it is planned to cancel 16,000 free stalls and increase the paid ones in the city: from 70,000 to 100,000. Not only that. The intention is also to review the tariffs and, above all, cancel some subscriptions and discounts. A plan which, overall, once fully operational, could yield hundreds of millions of euros for the Municipality’s coffers.

How much and where does the Municipality of Rome with the blue stripes earn (and will earn).

The role of traffic assistants

It is therefore obvious that there will be a need for a greater number of traffic assistants to monitor the payment of parking tickets. This, however, is not enough. Councilor Patanè, speaking in the commission, explained that work is underway to increase the powers of those who control the regularity of payments for leaving the car on the blue lines.

The idea is that their role as auxiliaries should not be limited to simple verification of payment, but evolve towards a function of guaranteeing traffic order. The objective of the Capitoline assembly is to ensure that the auxiliaries can intervene on all infringements that occur in their area of competence and which hinder the flow of traffic. Let’s talk, for example, about cars in double rows or those left at intersections and which, more often than not, hinder the circulation of public transport.

A specific number of auxiliaries must be provided for each number of paid parking spaces, thus guaranteeing adequate coverage of the territory and, consequently, greater traffic control in the monitored areas. Patanè wanted to underline how the increase in paid parking spaces and the future expansion of the powers of the auxiliaries serve mainly as an “urban planning regulation tool” to encourage the rotation of parking spaces and not as a “means to raise cash”.

The parking lots

As regards the interchange car parks present at the metro stations, they will remain free for Metrebus subscribers. For residents, however, a preferential nightly rate estimated at under 100 euros per month will be introduced.
