Mikaela Shiffrin moves up from fourth place and also wins the slalom in Semmering (Austria), fifth personal success out of as many slaloms played in the season, victory number 106 of her career in the World Cup. The best time in the second stage on the marked Semmering track allows Shiffrin to set the reference time at 1’48″82 to leave the Swiss Camille Rast, leader after the first, just nine hundredths of a second behind, with Lara Colturi returning to the podium again at 0″57. The two Austrians Katharina Liensberger and Katharina Truppe therefore occupy the positions just behind the podium.
In complicated conditions for everyone, Martina Peterlini manages to recover six positions compared to what she obtained in the first run to enter the top 15 thanks to fifteenth place with a gap of 5″39, while Lara Della Mea has to give way due to a slip after a few doors which forces her to 23rd place with a considerable delay which does not allow her to pocket World Cup points. But the results of the Tarvisian were notable and comparable to those of Shiffrin in the second part of the match. However, during the complex first heat, Beatrice Sola, Emilia Mondinelli, Giorgia Collomb, Giulia Valleriani and debutant Giada D’Antonio had exited, having been called upon to face critical race conditions.
Martina Peterlini was able to climb back up to fifteenth place: “I have to find my rhythm having missed the first part of the season; today is a step forward but I’m not happy because you can see that I lack the confidence to push to the maximum. But it’s a step in the right direction and I’ll take it and bring it home. In these last two races we found difficult conditions in which it was necessary to trust and I’m happy with how I managed these situations because I saw signs of adaptation that aren’t a given.”
Lara Della Mea still gave important signals, despite the mistake: “I started attacking completely, it wasn’t easy because the ground was a bit rough and I slipped away. It’s a shame, but it happens. I’m having better and better sensations, the mistake is there but the important thing is to give everything because if I manage to give my all I’ll take something home. So it’s always better to attack: now I’m happy to compete in Kranjiska Gora which is very close to my Tarvisio in front of my family and friends, they will be truly special races for me.”
For sixteen-year-old Neapolitan Giada D’Antonio, the Semmering slalom was her first contact with the World Cup. These are the impressions of the 2009 class of the Vesuvio Ski Club: “There was an intense moment there at the gate, with a bit of anxiety. It was more tension than fear: there was a stat/stop right before my race and I collected myself a little. I wanted to get to the end, but the track was very ruined and I tried to do a couple of tricks. I tried to give up but it didn’t work. Even the warm-up wasn’t easy, let’s say we adapted to the condition in the race. I feel a lot of support and I am grateful for all this. The debut in the World Cup is never forgotten and regardless of the result I am happy to be here. I wanted my family to be close to me at this moment: this debut makes me think that you can really think big and achieve big goals.”
The 2025 Women’s World Cup ends with Shiffrin largely in command of both rankings: overall, her 698 points give her a margin of 195 points over Rast and 214 over Robinson, with Sofia Goggia fourth at 404. The American leads the slalom rankings with full points (500) followed by Colturi (280) and Rast (262); Della Mea remains at 53 points and occupies twenty-first place.
The new year will open in Slovenian Kranjska Gora with a giant slalom and a slalom scheduled between Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 January.
