The area of the Roman coast, the municipality of Torri and the
But, throughout the city, there is a decrease in professionals, even more worrying if we consider that, according to data provided by the Fimp (Italian Federation of Pediatric Doctors) of Rome and Lazio, it is estimated that by 2028 approximately 333 pediatricians throughout the Region will turn 70 and retire. This is the highest figure at a national level.
Replacing them, especially in those more peripheral areas lacking in professionals in Rome, promises to be anything but simple.
Where there are fewer pediatricians in Rome
Going into more detail about the situation in Rome, the most updated picture comes from the latest “Health and healthcare” report published in the statistical yearbook of Roma Capitale 2025. From 2015 to 2024, 63 pediatricians were “lost”, going from 395 to 332 in the whole city. It must be said that the average population of residents up to the age of 13 has also fallen, going from 362,712 in 2015 to 301,217. On the other hand, however, in recent years there has been a decline in the rate of presence of pediatricians per 10 thousand inhabitants, which fell from 11.5 in 2021 to 11.0 in 2024.
More and more elderly and all in the city centre. Because Rome risks being left without pediatricians
But it is by looking at the situation of the municipalities that a more complete picture can be obtained. The largest number of assisted people, above the ceiling, is recorded in municipality VI, which is also the one with the second largest number of inhabitants under 13 years of age (210,288). In this municipality – which includes neighborhoods such as Tor Bella Monaca, Tor Vergata, Torre Angela, Torre Gaia, Torre Maura – each pediatrician assists on average 1096 girls and boys, with a rate for every 10 thousand inhabitants which is the lowest in Rome: 9.1 (the average at city level is 11). There are 29 professionals operating in this territory.
Also above the ceiling is municipality There are 16 professionals in total. Just above the XIV municipality (21 paediatricians), with a rate of 9.8 and an average of 1020 patients. This area of Rome includes neighborhoods such as Balduina, Battistini, Castelluccia, Cerquette Grandi, Medaglie D’oro, Monte Mario, Ottavia.
Municipality And a total of 25 pediatricians. To give a reference, municipality VII, which has the highest value of population up to 13 years of age (280,417), has 38 paediatricians, assisting an average of 845 patients with a rate per 10 thousand inhabitants equal to 11.8.
The alarm: “Pediatric care in private hands”
Completing the picture is the alarm launched in recent months by the Municipality of Rome, regarding the fact that pediatric care in the capital is largely in private hands.
The numbers tell the story: it is estimated, in fact, that in Rome, for every pediatric bed in the National Health System, there are 2.5 managed by private structures accredited by the Region. While the provision of beds for the maternal and pediatric area in the hands of accredited private individuals covers 71.6% of the city’s total offer.
The public department closes, the Vatican department collects millions. Because there is a pediatric emergency in Rome
The data are contained in a motion first signed by Nella Converti, president of the Capitoline Social and Health Policies commission and councilor of the Democratic Party, which was approved by the Capitoline Assembly.
In detail, there are two interventions indicated in the motion: promoting the review of the accreditation system and the rebalancing of the public-private hospital supply relationship in the city; relaunch and readjust the hospital network and in particular that intended for public pediatric care, strengthening staffing, equipment and beds to promote accessibility, safety and quality of service.
