Trump’s Christmas jab: “Merry Christmas even to the scum of the radical left”

“Merry Christmas to everyone, including the radical left scum who are doing everything they can to destroy our country, but are failing miserably.” American President Donald Trump wrote this, referring to the democratic opposition, in a post on Truth, in which he underlined how the United States is “respected again, perhaps like never before”.

The controversial message came immediately after Trump participated in the traditional Christmas Eve call with American children via NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command). While on vacation at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, the president and first lady Melania Trump chatted with little ones about expected gifts, promising not to let a “bad Santa Claus” infiltrate the country and even joking that receiving coal in your stocking might not be so bad after all.

“We want to make sure Santa Claus is good. Santa Claus is a very good person,” Trump said while speaking to 4- and 10-year-olds in Oklahoma. “We want to make sure that it doesn’t infiltrate, that it doesn’t let a bad Santa Claus into our country.” However, he did not provide further explanations.

During the calls, Trump appeared in excellent spirits. He even said at one point that he “could do this all day,” but would probably have to get back to more pressing matters. When an 8-year-old North Carolina girl asked whether Santa Claus would be angry if no one left him cookies, Trump said he didn’t think so, “but I think he would be very disappointed.” “You know, Santa Claus tends to be a little ruddy. You know what ruddy means? A little plump,” Trump joked. “I think Santa Claus would appreciate some cookies.”

The president and first lady, sitting side by side, took about a dozen calls. At one point, while Melania was on the phone and Trump was waiting to be connected, he noticed how little attention she was paying him: “She can concentrate totally, without listening to me.”

Asked by an 8-year-old girl in Kansas what she wanted to receive from Santa Claus, the response was “Um, not coal.” “You mean nice, clean coal?” Trump replied, evoking one of his favorite campaign slogans when he promised to revive domestic coal production. “I had to do it, I’m sorry,” the president added, laughing and even making the first lady, busy on another call, turn towards him with a smile. “Coal is clean and beautiful. Please remember that at all costs,” Trump said. “But you don’t want nice, clean coal, do you?” “No,” the little girl replied, saying she would have preferred a Barbie doll, clothes and candy.

It’s not the first time Trump has marked Christmas with criticism of his political enemies.

In 2024 he posted “Merry Christmas to the crazies of the radical left,” while during his first term, in the early morning of December 24, 2017, he targeted a senior FBI official who he believed was biased against him, as well as the media.
