She looks out the window and sees her mother-in-law being hit by a car, daughter-in-law falls ill: two women aged 87 and 59 die

A 87 year old woman invested while crossing the road, the daughter-in-law who she witnesses the scene from the window and is struck by a fatal illness a few moments later. It is the dramatic chain of events that led to the death of two women in the late afternoon on Boxing Day Pistoialong via Fiorentinain the Sperone area.

According to initial reconstructions, a car traveling in the direction of Bottegone hit an 87-year-old woman, Liliana Podesta, while crossing the street. The impact was violent and the old woman’s condition immediately appeared very serious. The driver of the vehicle stopped immediately after the accident and, in shock, apparently felt ill. The old woman’s daughter-in-law witnessed the scene, Laura Mecheri, 59 years old, which was located in the family home overlooking the street, a few meters from the location of the investment. It was she who raised the alarm by calling 112but shortly after, at the sight of her seriously injured mother-in-law, she in turn was struck by a sudden illness.

Help arrived within minutes. Ambulances from the Misericordia of Agliana and the Croce Verde of Chiazzano intervened on site, as well as the medical vehicle. Both women wereand transported in code red to the emergency room of the San Jacopo hospital in Pistoia. For Laura Mecheri, however, the health workers were unable to do anything: death was confirmed shortly after arrival. Liliana Podestà instead died due to the very serious trauma suffered in the accident, despite attempts to save her life.

The municipal police of Pistoia have secured the area and started investigations reconstruct the exact dynamics of the accident. Investigations are underway to clarify any responsibilities and verify the visibility and safety conditions of the road at the time of the impact. The two victims were both well known in the neighborhood. Laura Mecheri worked as a physiotherapist at Maic, was married to a doctor and her son is a volunteer for the Green Cross. Liliana Podestà, an 87-year-old pensioner, had lived in the same area for some time.
