In Rome, from the center to the outskirts, there was no shortage of bangs despite the ordinance signed by the mayor Roberto Gualtieri. In the neighborhoods of the capital, at the stroke of midnight, pyrotechnic “celebrations” took place, despite the recommendations that had been promptly given to spend an evening in safety. A day, moreover, which was marked on the afternoon of December 31st by the death of Ion Botnari, who lost his life in Acilia following the explosion of a firecracker.
The injured on New Year’s Eve
There was no shortage of injured people in the capital: there were 28 according to a first provisional balance drawn up by the Police Headquarters. None of these were life-threatening. The numbers were reported to RaiNews 24 by Marco Piccione, chief commissioner of the Rome Police Headquarters. He added: “We received around 500 calls, followed by 250 interventions mostly related to the explosion of fireworks.”
Roman for three fingers on New Year’s Eve
A 24-year-old from Rome lost three fingers when a firecracker exploded. He was treated in hospital and returned to the streets, injuring himself again. AdnKronos reported it with the events that occurred in Naples, where the boy was taking part in the celebrations for the arrival of the new year. The young man injured himself twice in the same night. After losing three fingers due to the explosion of a “bang”, he was taken to the Pellegrini hospital, where he was treated and discharged. Shortly afterwards, the hospital staff had to provide him with treatment again.
The tragedy of Acilia
A day, that of New Year’s Eve, which saw the death of Ion Botnari, a 63-year-old Moldovan, who died when a firecracker went off. The drama took place on December 31st in the afternoon in Acilia. The victim was in the street, in via Cortemaggiore. According to an initial reconstruction, he was handling the firecracker when he was hit by the explosion which caused injuries to his chest and face as well as, as reported by 118 sources, the amputation of his hand. When emergency services arrived, the man was on the ground. There was nothing that could be done for him, due to a massive hemorrhage that left him with no escape. The police are investigating the matter.
