ordinance of the ASL Roma 3 prohibits its collection and sale

A few hours from New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Eve dinnerwhen there is no shortage of fish and seafood dishes on the tables, an urgent health measure arrives affecting the Roman coast. There ASL Roma 3 has in fact communicated the issuing of an ordinance which provides for the temporary ban on the collection, marketing and direct human consumption of clamslive bivalve molluscs, coming fromArea 2 of Maccaresein the territory of the Municipality of Fiumicino.

The measure following the checks by the Zooprophylactic Institute on cockles: the precautionary stop pending new investigations

The precautionary measure, which intervenes at one of the moments of greatest consumption, is of an urgent nature, in time to prevent health risks linked to the food supply chain.

The ordinance specifically concerns live bivalve molluscs, in particular tellinecollected in Area 2 of Maccarese, a production area subject to periodic monitoring required by current health legislation, and with a ban, which affects all stages of the supply chainfrom collection at sea to marketing and release for direct human consumption.

The blockade was decided after exceeding the health limits detected in official controls

The provision has character temporarybut entails the immediate prohibition of any activity linked to cockles coming from the affected area, until further notice from the competent health authorities.

At the basis of the ordinance there is a test report drawn up byExperimental Zooprophylactic Institute of the Lazio and Tuscany Regionswhich carried out analyzes on cockle samples taken in Area 2 of Maccarese. The results of the checks indicated the presence of Salmonellaa bacterium potentially dangerous to human health, especially if associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked products.

The microbiological finding immediately triggered the procedures envisaged in these cases, with the adoption of restrictive measures aimed at preventing food risks for consumers.

Consumer protection at the center of the ordinance which concerns the Maccarese production area

Following the analytical results, Area 2 of Maccarese was subjected to a temporary downgrading of health status. This step automatically entails the ban on the collection and marketing of live bivalve molluscs intended for direct human consumption, as required by food safety legislation.

The downgrade will remain in effect until further investigations and health assessments are completednecessary to verify the restoration of safety conditions and the absence of contamination.

ASL Roma 3: prevent contaminated shellfish from reaching citizens’ tables

ASL RM 3 underlines that the provision has been adopted to protect public healthat a time of the year when the consumption of fish products is particularly high. The objective is to prevent potentially contaminated shellfish from reaching citizens’ tables, reducing the risk of foodborne infections.

Until further notice, it therefore remains any collection, sale and direct consumption activity is prohibited of cockles coming from Area 2 of Maccarese, awaiting the results of the next official controls which will determine the possible lifting of the ban.
