The 55-year-old woman was part of a group of 12 swimmers who set out on December 21 from Lovers Point, near Monterey, California, but never returned to shore
Erica Fox, an American triathlete, disappeared a week ago. Two days ago her body was found on a California beach and, according to the area firefighters, she was killed by a shark. The triathlete was 55 years old: she was part of a group of 12 swimmers who left on December 21 from Lovers Point, near Monterey, California, but never returned to shore. A witness a few days ago had told the «San Francisco Chronicle» that last December 21st I saw a shark emerge from the water with what looked like a human body in its mouth. For this reason there was not much hope that Erica could still be found alive.
After all, when a week ago Erica Fox her husband had not returned to shore Jean-François Vanreusel he had immediately raised the alarm fearing a tragedy. Crews from the US Coast Guard, rescuers from the fire brigade and local police had been involved for several days in the large-scale search for the 55-year-old. But then hopes of being able to find her alive were lost, so much so that her husband had organized a commemorative walk on the beach in her memory, fearing that he would never be able to find even her body in order to hold the funeral. Surprisingly, however, the remains of the body re-emerged from the ocean waters a few days ago. They were recovered on Davenport Beach, just south of Santa Cruz, Northern California
The recognition was made by Erica’s husband and father. Fox was a very good athlete having completed several triathlons (a sporting discipline which consists of practicing three different sports in a row, starting with 750m swimming, continuing with 20km on the bike and finishing with a 5km run) and two «half» Iron Man (specialties in which the distances increase, in an Iron Man in fact you cover 3.86km by swimming, 180km by bike, 42,195 km by running).
Journalist and fellow swimmer Sara Rubin, writing in the Monterey County Weekly, described Fox as a friend and avid athlete who had found inner peace swimming in the Pacific Ocean.
«Twenty years ago, Erica Fox and a friend started swimming every Sunday at Lovers Point, A Pacific Grove. Since then, several books have been written about the science of swimming and its benefits for our brains. But Erica never needed a book to learn what she knew from experience: swimming in the ocean is a balm for body and mind, an adventure as much as a meditation,” Rubin wrote. «Erica had developed a deeply intimate relationship withPacific Ocean not by studying it or looking at it, but by entering into it, again and again and again, on days of rough seas and on days of calm, covering what I can only imagine have become thousands of miles over the years” underlined the American journalist.
Rubin said that Fox She “understood the risk” of swimming in an ocean populated by great white sharks and that she “would resist calling this event an attack, urging us instead to call it an accident.”
Despite the fact that there are more and more sightings of white sharksit is rare for them to attack humans. So much so that in the last 75 years, before what happened to Erica, there had only been 16 registered victims in the American state.
