New Year’s Eve in Milan, Duomo with limited attendance and over a ton of barrels seized

For New Year’s Eve, access to Piazza Duomo will be limited to 4,500 people, given the presence of the Olympic facilities. Prefect Claudio Sgaraglia said this during the press conference with the leaders of the police force to present the data of the activity carried out in 2023.

The evening of December 31st

On the 31st there will be “a major public order activity by the police forces”, continued the prefect, who recalled the municipal ordinances on alcohol and barrels and the decisions adopted in recent days by the Provincial Committee for Order and Security. Furthermore, he added, the video surveillance systems in the Gallery and surrounding areas have already been improved “to allow better recognition in the event of crimes and to increase the perception of safety”.

Public order in Milan in 2025

“Experience tells us that New Year’s Eve in Milan has become a festive New Year’s Eve which brings together many people, especially from Northern Italy, many second generation foreigners, despite the absence of specific events in the square”, explained the commissioner Bruno Megale, present at the meeting. He then released some numbers on public order activities in 2023: “A year with over 1,600 trade union political demonstrations, 602 sporting events and football matches and 2,325 large events and public shows. Overall, among all the police forces, there were over 65 thousand people used in public order services”.

Over a ton of fireworks seized

The provincial commander of the financial police, Andrea Fiducia, also spoke about the New Year’s Eve celebrations, speaking about the seizures of fireworks and pyrotechnic articles carried out in December, in coordination with the Prefecture. “In the month of December alone we identified 60 thousand irregular pieces, equal to 1,200 kg, a figure that seems enormous to me,” he said. “We want to renew the appeal for maximum caution and absolutely not to use non-regular and certified products. In some cases, ‘homemade’ products have been found, made in a completely artisanal manner which constitute a very serious form of danger for anyone who uses them”.
