Flash occupation in the ghost school of Torrevecchia

Families try to occupy a school in Torrevecchia. This is what happened on Monday 29 December when several families tried to illegally occupy the Alberto Sordi, the school closed for works in via Taggia, for residential purposes.

The school has been closed since 2016

The school building has been closed since 2016 following seismic adaptation works which should have been completed in 2017. Mandatory conditional. In fact, this was not the case with the students who, after initially living with inconveniences related to the interventions, were transferred to other institutions. In 2019 the company that was supposed to complete the construction site was declared in default and removed and the opening of the school was postponed. Then in 2022 a fire devastates the gym and damages the first floor of the institute.

An odyssey which has seen the Capitoline council allocate as much as 4.4 million euros in 2022 (second installment) for extraordinary maintenance works which will mainly concern the renovation and energy requalification of the building, with the removal of systems and structures, the creation of flooring, false ceilings and electrical systems. Interventions that saw the first steps taken in the summer of 2024.

The occupation

Returning to the very current situation, the ghost school (a construction site under the responsibility of the public works department of Rome and the councilor for public works Ornella Segnalini has already been alerted to the situation, ed.) was the subject of occupation. According to what was gathered by RomaToday, approximately 50 foreign people (including minors) this morning, Monday 29 December 2025, entered the school building in via Taggia, occupying it for residential purposes.

“This is not an isolated episode. On November 14, the ‘Case e Campi’ school in the XV municipality was also occupied. Two schools occupied in the space of a month, a few kilometers apart, demonstrate that we are faced with a phenomenon that is becoming systematic. This situation is the result of wrong political choices and serious administrative inertia. For years, public schools have been left closed, abandoned or with construction sites progressing chronically slowly, creating the ideal conditions for them to be occupied. Leave empty and uncontrolled school buildings means encouraging illegality. Added to all this is a political climate which, especially on the left, tends to justify or legitimize illegal occupations as a response to housing problems. The policies carried out by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, characterized by tolerance and ambiguity, together with public statements by political leaders such as Ilaria Salis, are transmitting a dangerous message: illegality is perceived as acceptable very serious for safety, especially for the minors present, and a subtraction of public goods from the community. Immediate interventions are needed: protection of school buildings, restoration of legality, taking care of minors by the competent services and a clear change of direction. The residents’ patience is over.

The Digos immediately intervened on site and is following the intervention, to bring the situation back to legality and avoid further inconvenience to the residents of the neighborhood who have been waiting (too long) for the reopening of the school.

According to the latest updates in our possession, the occupation is continuing even in the early hours of the afternoon.
