News on basic income 2022

The Meloni government has substantially Citizenship income abolished with its first economic manoeuvre, even if the technical details have yet to be made public and possibly amended during discussion in the Chambers. However, the direction is traced: income support will change radically in 2023. And there will be hundreds of thousands of people who will lose it, without there being a real alternative to solve – or at least improve – their situation. Let’s talk about who – as it is generally indicated – “can work“, and will lose his basic income in the coming months.

Who will no longer receive the basic income

Basically from 1 January 2023 the recipients of income support who are “able to work“, will be able to receive a maximum of eight checks. Therefore, for those who can work, help will automatically stop in August 2023. For those who will thus be excluded from the basic income, a training or professional retraining course of at least six months will arrive, but there is still little clarity regarding the path these people will actually take. There is talk of a more comprehensive reform, but at the moment the executive seems to have limited itself to placing a flag. The recipients who have people over 60, disabled, minors and pregnant women are excluded from the radical cut wanted by the Meloni government.

How many people will lose their basic income

Numbers in hand, however, the people who will lose their basic income are very many. According to the accounts of Public Policy, which has had the opportunity to view the technical report accompanying the economic maneuver, let’s talk about 404 thousand households from which the aid will be withdrawn. The remaining 635 thousand, on the other hand, will still be granted. At the moment. About four out of ten families will lose their basic income, again starting from August 2023. The average amount of the check that reaches the households affected by the stop amounts to 543 euros. The savings for the State, in taking away the income from these families, is around 776 million euros.
