The beginning of a revolution often has a precise date. Ours is the November 30, 2022: the startup OpenAI has opened ChatGpt to the public, free of charge, a chatbot based on a Large Language Modela generative artificial intelligence capable of “understanding” and generating natural language. A “sentient” machine to communicate with and that, if it is far from passing the infamous Turing Test, as Nature explained, has in a certain way “broken” it with its capabilities.
It was the beginning of mass artificial intelligence. Since then ChatGpt has become a word on everyone’s lips. Then came Bard – now Gemini – from Google, Copilot from Microsoft, some models dedicated to the creation of images like Midjourney and Dall-e, and so on. And many of us, completely ignorant of computer engineering and programming, began to work, study, waste time with artificial intelligence. The science fiction of Matrix or Terminator quickly gave way to a science that goes beyond imagination.
One idea, shared by many insiders, is that at the level of products for individual users (so we are not talking about software intended for companies), there is not and there will not be in the near future an artificial intelligence model that will dominate all others. Just as it doesn’t make much sense to make rankings about who is the best at the moment.
Although there are those who have tried, and there are reference grids – such as the one based on human votes of the Large Model Systems Organization – on the performance of the different models. Currently the general public has many services available, even different from each other and not necessarily born from some big techwhich offer ideas and features to try.
