She was hit by awave while she was in the water with a friend and colleague, being forcefully slammed against the rocks of the Ladispoli coast without any possibility of saving herself: in this way, a 62-year-old teacher resident in Capranica tragically lost her life, municipality in the province of Viterbo.
According to what was reported by the authorities, the events occurred this afternoon, Thursday 13 June, on a beach in the Natural Reserve of Flavian Tower, in Ladispoli (Rome), in an area that regular visitors to the coast believe to be particularly dangerous especially when the sea is rough. At the point where the tragedy occurred, the cliff plunges into the water even at a great distance from the shore, and this creates risks for swimmers when the currents are very strong.
The particularly rough sea is certainly the cause of the terrible accident that cost the life of the 62-year-old teacher, who at that moment was in the company of a colleague and friend, a 52-year-old woman resident in Ronciglione, a municipality in the province of Viterbo. For both of us, today was the first day at the beach, but the afternoon of relaxation unfortunately ended in a dramatic way.
It is around 4.00 pm when the two teachers, despite the strong wind and the choppy sea, decide to take a bath, giving up going too far out to avoid unnecessary risks. Unfortunately, the women are overwhelmed by the waves of the sea while swimming and are therefore pushed by the strong currents towards the cliff. The 52-year-old somehow manages to cling on and save her life, while her colleague can do nothing to avoid the strong impact against the rocks.
Hearing the desperate cries for help coming from the beach were three officers of the local police of the metropolitan city of Rome, engaged in patrolling the Torre Flavia Nature Reserve. The men in uniform manage to bring the woman to shore, immediately triggering rescue.
The firefighters, 118 and the Civitavecchia coast guard rushed to the scene, but unfortunately for the survivor’s friend there was nothing left to do.
The body of the lifeless woman was found stuck between the rocks: the strong impact against the rocks, which knocked the 62-year-old unconscious, was likely to have been fatal. Investigators are working to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the accident.
