Sikh leader killed. Harpal Singh founded the Novellara temple: “It was a reference”

Reggio Emilia, 12 February 2024 – Era the leader of the Sikh community of Novellara the 59 year old Indian transporter Harpal Singh, killed by stabbing Friday evening in the artisan area of Seano, in the province of Prato. The victim was well known between Emilia and Lombardy (he lived in Gonzaga, in the province of Mantua) having been president and founder of the Gurdwara Singh Sabha of Novellara, one of the largest Sikh temples in Europe.

THE two alleged murderers – two Pakistanis aged 22 and 30 – were stopped and arrested by the Carabinieri of Prato, supported by their colleagues from Milan, while they were on a high-speed train between Milan and Turin with the intention of fleeing to Portugal, tracked down thanks to the GPS on their mobile phones. Singh was the owner of a trucking company in Gonzaga and the two Pakistanis who ended up in handcuffs were his collaborators.

Yesterday morning the Sikh community of Novella gathered together in a large and well-attended prayer event to remember him. A thousand people flocked to the temple to commemorate him. “Here he was a very important person for us, for me he was like an older brother – explains the vice-president of the community (which has almost twenty thousand faithful from all over Emilia-Romagna), Singh Iqbal, with emotion – He was our founder and was still an advisor to the association. He always came here to lend a hand, he never said no and was always ready to help anyone who asked him. He was truly a point of reference. We are all shocked by what happened.”

Harpal’s body is still blocked by the Prato judiciary which will order the autopsy. “As soon as we are granted permission, we will bring his body here and organize the funeral in his ‘his’ temple. Then, as per our tradition, he will be cremated and his ashes will then be taken to India where they will be scattered “. Harpal Singh leaves behind his wife, three sons and a brother.
