Full theaters and reservations haywire: “Buen Camino”, the new comedy starring Checco Zalone directed by Gennaro Nunziante (here is the review of the film), grossed almost 14 million in two days. On 26 December, Boxing Day, the film recorded over 7.9 million and almost one million spectators, surpassing “Avatar – Fire and Ashes” and monopolizing the market with 70% of the takings.
Mind-boggling numbers and historical record
The Boxing Day figure marks a +37% compared to the Christmas debut, confirming a growing trend that is rarely observed after the opening day. The average per copy is 10,715 euros, while the market share reaches 70.8%: more than seven out of ten spectators chose Zalone’s film, an unprecedented result for this holiday. “No film had ever grossed so much on Boxing Day”, underline the Cinetel data, which speak of a phenomenon capable of driving the entire box office. For comparison, the runner-up, “Avatar – Fire and Ash”, stopped at 1.6 million euros with 170,296 admissions, while “Nuremberg” recorded just 510,936 euros. The comparison highlights the sidereal distance between Zalone and the rest of the market: his film grossed almost five times more than the second title in the rankings.

The overtaking of Avatar and the market boom
Distributed by Medusa Film, “Buen Camino” has already surpassed the overall total of “Avatar – Fire and Ashes” (12.1 million) and contributed to pushing the Italian box office to 11,182,822 euros on Friday alone, one of the best December 26th ever, third historical result after 2010 and 2009. An increase of 506.7% compared to the previous Friday and of 60.2% compared to the same day in 2024, a sign of an extraordinary recovery for the sector. The data takes on an even more significant value if we consider the context: in recent years cinema has had to deal with competition from streaming and a decline in cinema attendance. Yet, Zalone’s success demonstrates that the Italian public is willing to return to the cinema when the offer is perceived as an event.
