The Marvel Cinematic Universe never ceases to amaze his fans, and this time the confirmation comes directly from social media. Kathryn Newtonthe actress he played the adult version of Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniaseems destined to return in the next big cinematic event of the House of Ideas. A photo shared in her Instagram Stories sparked the enthusiasm of fans: Newton showed herself at Disneyland wearing a hat from the crew of Avengers: Doomsdaya clue that can hardly be coincidental.
Revelation takes on particular weight if we consider that Marvel Studios had officially announced the cast of Avengers: Doomsday last March with a live streaming that lasted over five hours. On that occasion, chairs with the names of the actors were unveiled one after the other, revealing important returns such as Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Sebastian Stan. Faces from Fox’s X-Men saga, such as Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, had also been confirmed, along with stars who entered the MCU during the Multiverse Saga such as Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal and David Harbour. Yet, Kathryn Newton’s name was not on that list.
Cassie Lang represents a fundamental piece in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character, daughter of Scott Lang aka Ant-Man played by Paul Rudd, has had a significant evolution over the course of the franchise. Originally played by Abby Ryder Fortson in the first Ant-Man films, Cassie was then entrusted to Emma Fuhrmann in Avengers: Endgame, when the character had grown five years due to the Blip. However, when the time came to transform Cassie into a real heroine, Marvel chose to resort to recasting again, entrusting the role to the more experienced Kathryn Newton.
The choice proved to be strategic: in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Cassie not only demonstrated that she had developed technical skills similar to those of her father, but also played a crucial role in the battle against Kang the Conquerorplayed by Jonathan Majors. The latter was initially conceived as the great villain of the Multiverse Saga, before the events of recent weeks led Marvel to change course with the introduction of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Cassie Lang’s return in Avengers: Doomsday fits in perfectly in construction of the Young Avengersa project that Marvel is patiently weaving through several productions. Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel kicked off the recruiting process in The Marvels, when Kamala Khan approached Kate Bishop by Hailee Steinfeld. The 2023 film also hinted at Cassie’s involvement, an element later reinforced in Daredevil: Born Again, where Yusuf Khan, Kamala’s father, revealed to Matt Murdock that his daughter was in California meeting some friends. Considering that Cassie lives in San Francisco, the reference was far from coincidental.
